Gehen Sie Riesen!
The NFL fan base in Germany might want to get the chants ready: go Giants!
Amid strong speculation, the New York Giants could be on the verge of being selected as the opponent for the Carolina Panthers scheduled for Munich, Germany, as part of the league’s International Series this season.
The Giants are set to travel to Charlotte to play the Panthers this year, but that itinerary may change significantly, and soon, so get the passports ready. The NFL is expected to officially announce the four games as part of the International Series on Wednesday morning on NFL Network during a special edition of “Good Morning Football.”
That announcement will come hours prior to the NFL’s release of the entire regular season schedule at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
If the Giants are chosen, this will mark the fourth trip overseas for a game for Big Blue. The game will be played at Allianz Arena, which is the home stadium of FC Bayern.
What you need to know
In 1950, the Giants were the first NFL team to play outside the United States and in 1994 made their first trip to Germany to play in the American Bowl for a preseason game against the Chargers.
The Giants are 3-0 since they played in the first London game during the 2007 season at Wembley Stadium. They also played in the UK in 2016, defeating the Rams, and most recently in 2022 when they defeated Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at the home of Tottingham Hotspur F.C.
In all three of those seasons, the Giants reached the playoffs, including winning Super Bowl XLII.
Why does it make sense?
In March, the Giants were granted international marketing rights in Germany through the Global Markets Program, their first entry into the program. This announcement gives the Giants the opportunity to activate in the German market through fan engagement, digital content, and events.
The Giants kicked off their marketing rights in Germany last month during the 2024 NFL Draft when former players Brandon London and Amani Toomer announced the fourth-round draft pick of Penn State tight end Theo Johnson from Germany with a collection of fans and alumni. The Giants also recently announced their International Fan of the Year, a German native who was surprised with a video message from Eli Manning and a trip to attend the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit.
