India on Saturday summoned the deputy chief of the German Embassy and lodged a strong protest against the German Foreign Ministry’s remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Foreign Ministry said that German envoy Georg Enzweiler was summoned by the Foreign Ministry officials and told that the German Foreign Ministry’s comment on Kejriwal’s arrest is interference in India’s judicial process. The ministry said it is wrong to make any ‘prejudicial assumption’.
The German Foreign Ministry spokesperson had taken cognizance of Kejriwal’s arrest. The German official had said, “We believe and expect that standards related to the independence of the judiciary and fundamental democratic principles will also apply in this case.”
What did the Foreign Ministry spokesperson say?
“The Deputy Chief of the Embassy of Germany in New Delhi was summoned today and conveyed India’s strong protest over his MEA spokesperson’s comments on our internal matters,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. Said, “We view such comments as interference in our judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary.”
‘The law will take its course’
Jaiswal said, “India is a vibrant and strong democracy with rule of law. As in all legal matters in the country and elsewhere in the democratic world, the law will take its course in this case. Prejudicial notions in this regard are completely unwarranted.”
