Update: The story was updated with press release from Amazon
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) intends to invest €7.8B ($8.44B) in Germany through 2040 to boost its cloud computing infrastructure, mainly for Europe.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, said the AWS European Sovereign Cloud is planning to launch its first AWS Region in the state of Brandenburg, Germany, by the end of 2025, available to all customers. The investment will be in infrastructure, jobs creation, and skills development.
In October 2023, AWS announced that it would launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud for public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries. The sovereign Cloud would allow customers to keep all metadata they create in the EU. The cloud was to be launched with its first AWS Region in Germany and be available to all European customers.
“State-of-the-art data centres for secure cloud computing are the basis for a strong digital economy. I am pleased Amazon Web Services (AWS) has chosen Brandenburg for a long-term investment in its cloud computing infrastructure for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud,” said Jörg Steinbach, Brandenburg’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy.
The company noted that the investment in Germany would support an average 2,800 full-time jobs in local German businesses annually.
Last week, Telefónica’s (TEF) German unit noted that it plans to shift 1 million 5G users to AWS cloud this month.
Amazon is also investing in Asia to expand its operations. Earlier this month, AWS announced that it plans to invest S$12B (about $8.88B) to boost its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore over the next four years.
